Poem: Unlearning

Unlearning

I learnt from a young age

that to be a woman

is to be water

melted silver

to be a woman is to take the shape of your vessel

contorting myself

into every shape

to be an extension

of someone else’s body

the first taste of not being enough

their words like polished scissors

clipping our wings

“this is what it means to be a woman”

what could be more integral

to becoming a woman

than the process of unlearning

the false truths that we were taught as girls
